Meditation has long been associated with positive effects on mental health, but we often forget about the impact it can have on our bodies. More and more studies are coming out showcasing the positive effects meditation can have on our physical well-being. Most notably, the effects it can have on our hearts.

Dozens of studies have come out in recent years, all telling us the same thing. Meditation can and will help keep our hearts healthy. The importance of these studies cannot be ignored.

Keeping Your Heart Healthy

The American Journal of Cardiology published a study that included data from over 60,000 adults. Of those adults, a little less than ten percent acknowledged that they practice meditation.

From there, the American Journal of Cardiology was able to ascertain several vital facts. By comparing those responders who practiced meditation versus those who don’t, they found that they have overall heart-healthy benefits.

Including a 35 percent lower risk of high cholesterol. Reduced risk of high blood pressure (14%), reduced risk of type 2 diabetes (30%), a lower risk of stroke (24%), and a reduced risk of coronary artery disease (49%).

How It Connects

By reducing one’s stress levels and anxiety, they create a healthier environment – literally. Looking at the results mentioned above, Dr. Chayakrit Krittanawong of Baylor College (lead author of the study) believes that reducing stress likely played a role.

Harvard also published an article discussing the positive effects of meditation and how the two possibly connect. 

Types Of Meditation

When it comes to finding a suitable form of meditation for you, there are plenty of options out there. What is more important is that you pick one that you can consistently apply, ideally on a daily basis.

Everyday Health lists several recommend forms of meditation, including Zen meditation, Raja yoga, Transcendental meditation, relaxation response, Samantha (focusing on your breath), Vipassana, and Mindful meditation.

These are some of the most recommended meditation practices because of how approachable they are for every individual out there. There is no skill or fitness level required for these forms.
